Getting to Sardinia
As Sardinia is an island, there are just two ways of getting there: flying or taking the ferry. There are three main airports and three main ports:
Alghero Fertilia airport and the port of Porto Torres in the north west;
Olbia Costa Smeralda airport and the ports of Olbia Isola Bianca and Golfo Aranci in the north east;
The airport of Cagliari Elmas in the south.
Ryanair flies to Alghero and Cagliari from several airports including Brussels Charleroi, Milan Bergamo, Pisa, Rome Ciampino and many others. Meridiana serves Olbia from Verona, Milan (both Linate and Malpensa) and Rome Fiumicino. Airone flies from Rome and Milan to Alghero and Cagliari. If you want to take over responsibility for the CO2 emissions your flights cause, try Atmosfair :)
The main ferry routes are from Genova to Porto Torres and from Livorno or Civitavecchia (near Rome) to Olbia Isola Bianca and to Olbia Golfo Aranci. Tirrenia, Grandi Navi Veloci, Moby Lines and Sardinia Ferries are the main operators.
If you plan to come by plane, our advice is to land in Alghero, one of our favourite places. You can spend some quality time in and around the city until the wedding day. Silanus is just an hour’s drive away.
If you arrive in Olbia, our advice is to go straight to the Oliena-Dorgali area (near Su Gologone). You will have plenty of things to do and to see including trekking, sports and of course the sea.
Cagliari is the farthest option but still a 90-minute drive from Silanus.
Public transport options in Sardinia are still quite limited in terms of frequency and availability. If you are not coming with your own car, our advice is to rent one at your arrival point. Let us know if you have some free seats in your car or on the contrary if you’d rather hitch a ride. We can do some car pooling to match supply and demand!
